Cleveland Rape Crisis Center (CRCC) is an 80-employee nonprofit organization providing comprehensive counseling services, victim assistance in the justice system and 24-hour services to survivors of rape and sexual abuse in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake and Ashtabula Counties.
In mid-2017, CRCC, headquartered in downtown Cleveland, desired to expand its footprint to provide its services to more survivors in the Greater Cleveland Area. However, it had recently opened a new, standalone office in Westlake, Ohio, requiring considerable fundraising, plus investments in staff time, and risk. “We knew with our Westside location opening just a few months earlier, we were not ready to undertake another standalone office so soon, but the need to expand to the East side was substantial,” said President & CEO Sondra Miller.
CRCC and Nexis Wellness, a health and wellness co-working community, began discussing opportunities to work together in the summer of 2017. Nexis was able to offer CRCC a full-time consultative office and access to additional consultative and group spaces on an on-demand basis. “We chose Beachwood as an East side alternative to a standalone office because we didn’t want the inconveniences, challenges or obligations associated with design, construction and long-term lease commitments,” Miller said. “With Nexis Wellness, we literally signed a lease and were accepting appointments the next week. They took so much of the burden off our shoulders.”
By offering CRCC a full-time, private office, access to additional counseling rooms and conference rooms and all-inclusive amenities like reception with a digital check-in kiosk, a stocked break room, printer/fax/copy machine and high-speed Wi-Fi, Nexis was able to lower CRCC’s monthly expenditure by roughly 60% compared to its standalone Westlake location. This cost savings does not include the cost of administrative staff, which was eliminated by the digital check-in kiosk.
With minimal commitment and capital expense, CRCC has helped 120 clients in roughly 950 sessions during the first 16 months with Nexis Wellness in Beachwood. Having proven the demand and business case for services in the eastern suburbs, CRCC announced plans for a new, standalone location in Shaker Heights, slated to open in July 2019. Due to the programming offered by Nexis Wellness, and the breadth of services offered by other complementary Nexis Members, CRCC plans to maintain its presence in the Nexis Wellness Beachwood office. “The value offered by the Nexis community cannot be underestimated. Without them, we would not have been able to offer our programming to many of our clients. Equally important are the additional services our clients can receive from the network of Nexis Members. We are excited to continue our Membership and would be happy to work with Nexis Wellness at future locations,” says Kirsti Mouncey, Chief Program Officer.
